" J. L. Frazee, farmer, Section 5, owns 250 acres valued at $25 per acre, was born in Westmoreland Co., PA, September 13, 1803. He removed to Perry Co., OH, where he resided for a term of years, thence moved to Clinton Co., IN. In 1851, he located in Chickasaw on his present place of residence, which is a finely cultivated and improved farm, situated about three-quarters of a mile north of the village of Bassett. He is one of the pioneers of this section, and at time of his settlement in this county, his nearest grain market was MacGregor, where a trip with his oxen would occupy from six to fourteen days time. In politics he takes no active part, and, although having been honored several times by the election to different office, he always failed to qualify for the positions. On the 26th day of March, 1826, he was united in marriage to Susanna Harris, a native of Ohio, and they have four children -- two sons and two daughters -- Benjamin, John, Nancy Jane and Elizabeth."
His son Benjamin F Frazee married Mary S. Michael. They had two sons: Eli Roscoe and James O. Frazee.
His daughter, Nancy Jane, married John W. Campbell. They had 12 children.
His daughter Elizabeth married Didymas Benson Jarrad. They had 8 children. All eight children died within eight days of each other of diphtheria.they ranged in ages from 5 to 14 years.
His son John Frazee married Cyrena Sarah Beckwith, and they had 6 children - one to die in infancy and two to die of diphtheria within two days of each other in Nov 1887.
The obituary for James Lytle Frazee tells more about this much respected man:
"Died at Bassett, Chickasaw Co., IA. Mr. James L. Frazee, aged 81 years. Deceased was born in PA in 1803. When but a lad, emigrated with the family into Ohio. From thence to Indiana. Here James found a companion to join him in the victories and vicissitudes of life, where they remained until the year 1851, and from there journeyed to this state with his wife, two sons and two daughters. He--the brave pioneer--was among the first to enter land in Chickasaw county, then but a wild, sparsely inhabited wilderness, and here he settled down to live, work and die.
With strong hands and loving hearts, soon the wilderness "blossomed as the rose," and a beautiful and happy home was made by cheerful labor, economy and perserverance. For a number of years an unbroken family enjoyed their home, but alas! the death summons came; the wife, the mother, bid a long farewell, and left for the spirit land.. On, how lonely, more than 21 years since, loving hands, with weaping friends, laid her remains away to rest. The sons and daughters are now married and settled in life. The younger son remaining on the old homestead; the elder son near by, and two daughters far away in Nebraska. But the sad summons of death, born on lightning wings, brought the family together once more to look upon the face of their dear father, now cold and peaceful in death, and on this bright and beautiful day - October 16, 1884 - neighbors and friends, far and near, many of the old veterans with whitened locks, came to pay their tribute of respect to the honored dead, a day, with many, long to be remembered. May heaven's blessing rest upon the bereved family. Wm. Morse" .
