General Notes for John Springer
Per family notes:
"John Springer, son of Charles Springer, was born in or near Hagarstown, Maryland. He served in the Revolutionary War from Frederick County, Maryland, Middle District, in the Militia under the command of Valentine Creager, October 3rd, 1776. He served for a short time, then later accompanied Daniel Boone on Boone's first expedition in exploring Kentucky and it is said he told his son, John Springer, later of Madison County, Illinois, that while on this trip while out hunting one day, he found a wild turkey gobbler almost starved to death in the deep snow that had been on the ground. He put the turkey on the ground after scraping away the snow. He had some parched corn in his shot bag which he carried for lunch while hunting. He divided the corn with the turkey and left him to eat it. His act of kindness to the poor turkey was evidence that he had a big, kind, loving heart."

"About 1775/1776 he married Sarah Ann Butler of Pennsylvania and lived at or near Frederick City, Maryland until after his first two children, Charles and Mary, were born."
