He removed to Orange County, where he was the most prominent figure of his day, and where he was commissioned colonel of the county militia, 15 September, 1775. He was also president of the New York Provincial Congress, 1776; member of New York Council of Appointment, 1777; and member of New York Senate, 1777-1780.
