General Notes for Johann Frederick (Fred) Becker
FRED BECKER Fred Becker was born in 1869 at Eckheim, Russia. When he was six years old, his parents, Peter and Maria Becker, decided to leave their little village on the Volga River and with their four sons, Jacob, Peter, Fred, and George, make a new home in America.

Upon reaching the United States, the Becker family first came to Russell, KS. In 1890 Fred and Margaret Haffner were married and established a home in Lehigh. They were the parents of five children: Arthur, Marie (Keans), Herbert, Lenora (Stansberry), and Arnold. News of free land in the Oklahoma Territory prompted Fred Becker, George Schultz, and Jacob Weber to come to Shattuck, Oklahoma, in the fall of 1900. They were favorably impressed with the country and filed on claims. Fred filed on a quarter-section of land five miles south of Shattuck. In the spring of 1901 he bought him family and all their belongings on an immigrant train to Shattuck. The family lived on their claim until 1905 when Fred decided to put his holdings in a mercantile business. They moved to Shattuck and established a store on the corner of Main and Fourth. This store, like many others of that era, stocked everything from crackers and straw hats to plows. The Fred Becker Hardware and Grocery Store served the Shattuck community until 1922.

The Becker family home was built in 1908 on the corner of 4th and S. Cedar Streets. Fred and Margaret Becker helped organize the first Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Shattuck. They took an active interest in the Church and he held an office in the Church for many years. After a long illness, Margaret Becker died in 1932. Fred then married Mollie Sell in 1933 and they moved to Hillsboro, KS, where he lived until his death in 1948. Submitted by Mildred Becker.
