General Notes for Bette Lorraine Schurtleff
Bette was born in 1917 in Boise, ID, and spent her young life moving around between a number of family relations as her father worked in cattle and sheep ranching. For high school, she moved to Weiser, this time to a private boarding high school, the Intermountain Institute, known locally as The Weiser Institute. There she enjoyed making lots of friends and participating in all sorts of athletic endeavors, including swimming, basketball, and tennis. She remained a dedicated baseball and football fan and throughout her life was well known for her enthusiastic and vocal reactions to exciting games. When she was nineteen, she attended a local dance where she met her future husband, George Shurtleff, an aspiring swing band musician and band leader. George and Bette married in 1936, and the first of their four sons, Gary, was born the next year. Within a few years, George was born. Being married to a musician meant still more moving around. During WWII she lived in Portland, OR where George was employed performing music and working in the shipyards.. Bette was also able to attend art school, which she loved. After the war, the family returned to Idaho, living in Payette near her husband's family. While there, her family grew to include sons Geoff and Raymond. She used her artistic talents to paint backdrops and murals for the local Apple Blossom Festival. In 1961, Bette, moved to Delevan, NY., outside of Buffalo, where her husband worked for a music publishing company. There they raised their two younger sons together until she was widowed. Soon after, in 1968 Bette and her younger sons moved to Washington state to live nearer to her older sons. In Seattle, she went to work for Group Health Cooperative, where she worked as a dietician for 18 years before she retired. In the 1980s she moved to the Capitol Hill neighborhood in a condominium overlooking the city and was an active parishioner of St. James Catholic Church. She lived there until after her 90th birthday.
