Here are the facts. Elmer and Mary Hockett took Marguerite Brisendine into their home and raised her. Her son told me that her name was Brisendine even though the Hocketts raised her. Marguerite married J. D. Stanley who graduated from the academy in 1924 and from the college in 1949.
My guess is that Marguerite came to Haviland to school and that is when Hocketts met her and had she lived with them and they treated her as their daughter ever since. Casey Roberts, a tech man here at the college, had a grandmother named Marian Brisendine with whom I attended FU, and she came from Liberal KS. I noticed that Marguerite was born in Tennessee. I have a guess that her parents moved to liberal and that is where all of the Brisendines that went here and to Friends U came from.
I believe the Hocketts and Marguerite’s relationship was more than a student boarder. I don’t know that Hocketts ever adopted her but I do believe the Hocketts left her some land east of town as part of their estate. ---------------------------------------------------------------
