General Notes for Robert Rose | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Nothing is known of his wife Margery except for her name on the ship "Francis" when she came to America with her husband and eight children in 1634. It is assumed that she arrived in Connecticut with her husband but died within the ten years. However, no date of death or place of burial can be found. It is believed that she was not alive in 1644. Robert was one of the group considered to be Puritans. Robert and Margery settled in an Indian settlement known as Pyquag, which was soon renamed Watertown. The name was changed to Wethersfield in 1635. Robert is seen in many original land records and histories of the town. He was constable in 1640 and Representitive in 1641-1643 in Wethersfield. He was a Freeman in Stratford in 1648.. Some time between 1644 and 1646, Robert and some of his children moved to Branford, CT. It is believed that he had a tiff with the minister of the Congregational Church in Wethersfield, and that is one of the reasons he and several of his neighbors decided to move. He is also seen in many deeds and town records in Branford, CT.. In John Camden Hotten's The Original Lists of Persons of Quality (pp. 177-180), is a list of the passengers of the Francis (John Cutting, Master) which embarked from Ipswich, England "bound for new England" the last of April 1634. From the list of adult passengers who presumably took the Oath of Allegiance, there are listed: Robert Rose aged 40Margery his wife aged 40 The passenger list also included their children: John Rose aged 15Robert Rose aged 15 Eliz: Rose aged 13 Mary Rose aged 11 Samuell Rose aged 9 Sarah Rose aged 7 Danyell Rose aged 3 Dorcas Rose aged 2 From History of Ancient Wethersfield, CT (Stiles): "He was one of the 'Adventurers' from Watertown, Mass., who first settled Wethersfield.; was a large land-holder here; a soldier in the memorable Pequot campaign; constable in 1639-40; juror in 1641; rep. to Gen Ct., 1641-2-3; had many offices conferred on him by the Town and Court; and in 1644 rem. to Totoket, (Branford), where shortly after June 7, 1664, he m.
