General Notes for John M. Hockett
John M. Hockett was born in Randolph Co., Indiana, Sept. 21, 1837. When only one year old his parents moved to Iowa and settled near his late residence. He was married to Mary E. Hammar October 14, 1858. He had a birthright membership with the Society of Friends, and was converted near the age of thirty. His faith in Christ increased and the path grew brighter as the end drew near. He has frequently expressed a desire to be ready to meet the Master when the summons should come. After returning from Salem, near five o'clock Thursday evening, he was taken with apoplexy, and continued unconscious until he passed away at 12:15 the next day, February 20, 1903. He leaves a faithful and loving wife, one boy whom they have raised from childhood, three sisters and three brothers, nieces and nephews and a host of friends to mourn the loss. Funeral services were held at Cedar Creek on Sabbath morning at 11 a.m., conducted by the pastor, Bessie Ferguson. Those present from a distance were a brother Jonathan and nephew, John Hockett, from Kansas; a sister, Jane Frazier from Marshalltown, Iowa; niece and two nephews, George Hockett and sister Nancy and Arthur Hammar from Ringgold Co., Iowa; also a sister of Mary Hockett, Margaret Addington and husband of Dallas Co., Iowa.
