General Notes for Elizabeth Rachel Clair
Elizabeth Rachel (Rhea) Clair with Children:

The Clair family is represented in Lucas County only by descendants of Mary Elizabeth (Clair) Miller because considerable debt caused James Wayne and Elizabeth Rachel to load all the family save my great-grandmother (already married) into wagons and head out for Kansas in 1878. The flight reportedly began in the middle of the night. Hmm. Anyhow, I love this photo because it demonstrates a genetic quirk of the Clairs. The men tended to be scrawny. But the women all were big and powerful, physically and mentally, up to any challenge --- a trait they inherited from Elizabeth Rachel's grandmother, Rachel (Jolliff) Rhea, a Kentucky native who lived and died in Sangamon County, Illinois. These are the eight surviving Clair children between 1910 and 1920 with their mother, Elizabeth Rachel, front and center, photographed in Kansas.

The men are (from left) Walter Sanders Clair, Robert Milton Clair, Charles Edward Clair and Alvin Erastus Clair.

The women are (from left) Clarissa (Clair) Mills, Mary Elizabeth (Clair) Miller, Elizabeth Rachel (Rhea) Clair, Sarah Angeline (Clair) McCoy and Hannah Zipporah "Zella" Clair Hockett, a Quaker minister.

Elizabeth Rachel (Rhea) Clair with Next Four Generations: Per Frank D. Myers: Here's another photo of my great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Rachel (Rhea) Clair, taken as part of a five-generation group. Sadly, I do not recognize three of the generations. Clarissa Jane (Clair) Mills is standing behind her mother. The other three people in the photo are a daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Clara. The photo most likely was taken at Elizabeth Rachel's home in Alton, Kansas. Her husband (and my great-great-grandfather), James Wayne Clair, had died 6 May 1894 while the family was living on their farm in Twin Mound Township, Rooks County, and Elizabeth Rachel had moved subsequently to Alton in Osborne County. Elizabeth Rachel died 1 January 1922 in Alton and is buried with James Wayne and other family members in Shilo Cemetery near Codell, Rooks County.
