General Notes for Harriet Jane Boles
Obituary: Death has stilled another voice in our midst. Mr. Harriet J. Boles was called home to her reward October 23, 1906. She had been in poor health for some time and for six weeks had been lingering between life and death. Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock, without a sign or groan she passed peacefully away. She was born in Portage county, Ohio, October 23, 1833 and moved with her parents to Cumberland county, Illinois. Her maiden name was Harriet Jane Treash. January 9, 1857 she was united in marriage to T. T. Boles. They have nine children, three of which preceeded her to the Haven of Rest. While quite young she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church. With her husband and children she moved to Stevens county, Kansas in March 1887 and later to Seward county. She endured the privations incumbent to pioneer life and enjoyed the prosperity of industry in an undeveloped country. Whether in adversity or prosperity she never lost sight of Jesus and always enjoyed talking of Christ and His works and did what she could to promote His glory. After spending nearly seventy-three years for Christ and coming to the "valley of the shadow of death" God gave the utterance and she said, "Glory to God." She leaves a husband, five sons, a daughter and several grandchildren besides a host of friends to mourn their loss. To the bereaved we say, let not your heart be troubled for the poet was right when he said: How blest the righteous when he dies, When sinks a weary soul to rest; How mildly beams the closing eyes, How gently leaves the expiring breath; Life's labors done as sinks the day, Light from its load the spirit flies, While heaven and earth combine to say: How blest the righteous when he dies.
