General Notes for Jesse Clark Hoover
son of Eli Hoover and Mary Davis (was the daughter of John Davis and Lydia Coate). Jesse was eight when the family group migrated by oxcart from OH to IA. This included the grandparents, Jesse and Rebecca and all their children and grandchildren. They were looking for a place where large families of children could be supplied with land from the public domain. Jesse grew up on his father Eli's new farm a mile west of West Branch and served his father until he was 21. About 1870 he set up for himself a blacksmith and wagon-making shop about a block south of the crossroads at West Branch. He developed and manufactured his father's automatic cattle pump in his shop. In 1875 he started a farm machinery and supply business about a block east of the West Branch crossroads. He was a handsome, capable man and well on his way to more than average material success when he died of pneumonia. He left clear property and seven thousand dollars for his widow and three small children.
