Newton J. Frazier Mangled by a Train at Abbieville [sic, Abbeville], Mississippi, Where He Resided
WAS BORN IN THIS COUNTY FORTY-SIX YEARS AGO
His Wife was Here on a Visit When the News of Her Husband's Death Was Received
Newton J. Frazier, who until eight years ago, was a resident of this county met a tragic death at Abbieville [sic], Miss., Wednesday night. A telegram to his brother Taylor B. Frazier, received yesterday, brought the sad tidings but gave no further particulars than to say that Mr. Frazier had been killed by the cars and that his body was badly mangled.
Mr. Frazier's wife, who was formerly Miss Hattie Hutchinson, and also a native of this country [sic], was here visiting relatives when the dreadful news came. She had intended leaving for Mississippi next Monday and had so written her husband. She left for Abbieville this morning accompanied by Taylor B. Frazier.
Deceased was born in this county on the old Frazier homestead northeast of the city in 1857, there grew to manhood and folowed [sic] farming until eight years ago when he went south, locating in Abbieville [sic, Abbeville, and so on], where he had employment in a general store. He had been twice married, the first Mrs. Frazier being a Yuba Michael, who died several years ago. Twelve years ago he was married to Miss Hutchinson [sic, Hutchison], the surviving widow.
He is also survived by four children, Glenn, Merle [sic, Myrl], Edna and an eighteen-months old infant. His mother is still living and resides on the old home place. There are also surviving two brothers and two sisters, Taylor B., who resides northeast of the city; John B., of Kokomo; Mrs. S.G. [sic] Colby, of Geetingsville, and Mrs. Julia Palmer, who resides with her mother. Mr. Frazier was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was secretary of the lodge at Abbieville. He was a man of splendid character who had a host of friends both in this county and in the south. He will be buried in Abbieville.

Newton Jasper Frazier was born 23 Mar 1857 in Clinton County, Indiana to Richard Bard Frazier (1808-1887) and Mary Ann York (1816-1906.)
Newton Frazier married Yuba Alice Michael (1862-1888) on 5 Feb 1879 in Clinton County, Indiana.
See notes in my previous post for their children. Yuba died in childbirth of her daughter, Edna. (The letter written by Janet Frazier Blickenstaff and sent to Frazier Cousins by our new member, Beth Reasoner, says that this child was named Eunice, but that is not correct. Edna Laura Frazier Ferguson grew up to become the family historian and collected a great deal of information regarding the Fraziers. Much of this information is housed in the genealogy section of the Clinton County, Indiana public library.)
Newton Jasper Frazier married Sarah Harriet "Hattie" Hutchison on 1 Jul 1891 in Clinton County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Thomas Hutchison (1828-1914) and Caroline Coon (1832-1912.) Information regarding children of Newt's second marriage is in my previous post.
A note of warning if you are researching the 1880 census in Center Township, Clinton County, Indiana. The census enumerator, Samuel A. Hopple, wrote many incorrect first names. Based on my own family in that township, I would guess that about half of the first names are not correct. Yuba is listed as Uba (and I give him a pass for that one), but two Julias on the page are also listed as Uba. James is listed as John, Lilly is listed as Louisa, Otis is listed as Oliver, Lezley is listed as Lester, and so on.... I struggled for years on the basis of the information in that census, and I do not like Samuel A. Hopple!
